What is the difference between phonics and vocabulary apps?

Little English · Product and editorial guidance · 2026-10-18

Another way to ask:Should we learn English words or practise phonics first?

The direct answer

Vocabulary activities connect words with meaning. Phonics activities connect written letters and letter groups with sounds. They address different tasks and can be combined according to the child’s current needs.

How to think about it

Blending the sounds in cat does not by itself establish an understanding of a cat. Recognising its picture does not establish that the child can read the written word. Observe meaning and letter–sound work separately rather than treating either activity as a substitute for the other.

Something to try

  1. Use a picture to check whether cat has a familiar meaning.
  2. Check whether the sounds of c, a and t in this word have been introduced.
  3. Add context when meaning is unfamiliar, or suitable sound work when decoding is unfamiliar.

Scope and limits

Little English Words focuses on vocabulary interactions; Phonics is a four-level series. There is no verified fixed order that suits every child.

Page language does not establish app interface language. Check your regional store for languages, prices and availability.
