What if my child dislikes vocabulary drills?
Another way to ask:My child refuses flashcards. How else could we practise words?
The direct answer
Give a word a purpose in a small action: finding a toy, passing a cup to a doll or putting things away. Every encounter with English need not require an immediate spoken answer.
How to think about it
A refusal can relate to the task, the controls or how the child feels at that moment; one refusal does not identify their ability. Invite them to choose an object, model the activity, then offer a turn. A word encountered in an app can also be used away from the screen.
Something to try
- Let your child select one of two toys and model its English name.
- Hide it somewhere easy to find and invite a search using the same word.
- Put it away together and meet the word in a new situation later.
Scope and limits
Play is not a guaranteed solution to reluctance. Repeating aloud is optional, and your child can finish the activity.
