How can we practise when letter sounds do not blend into a word?
Another way to ask:My child can say the sounds in cat but cannot put them together.
The direct answer
Reduce the task to one short word with familiar meaning and sounds. Model how the sounds come together, then invite a shared attempt instead of repeatedly asking for a guess.
How to think about it
First check that the child is using sounds rather than letter names and that your model is reliable. Moving a finger along the letters can distinguish separate sounds from the whole word. If the task remains difficult, return to listening and pointing rather than adding longer words.
Something to try
- Choose a short word containing sounds already encountered and explain its meaning.
- Listen to the whole word, then model or listen to how its sounds blend.
- Try together and note which part still needs a model.
