How can familiar words become short English phrases?

Little English · Product and editorial guidance · 2026-10-18

Another way to ask:My child can say apple and bear. What could we try next?

The direct answer

Put a familiar word into a meaningful exchange, such as greeting a toy with “Hello, bear.” A longer word list or an entire book does not have to be the immediate next task.

How to think about it

Knowing vocabulary, understanding a spoken phrase and reading a written sentence are not interchangeable. First model a phrase with an action, then invite participation; look at matching text or pictures together afterwards. Familiar situations make it easier to see which part needs help.

Something to try

  1. Choose an object or character your child knows.
  2. Model one short phrase with an action and explain its purpose.
  3. Take turns using it, then try a similar example.

Scope and limits

This is an activity path, not a claim that a fixed vocabulary size produces independent reading.
