What if my child recognises a flashcard but not a new picture?
Another way to ask:My child remembers the card’s position but cannot name the real object.
The direct answer
Meet the same word in a different, understandable setting, modelling it before observing. Recognising a familiar card and using the word with another picture, object or action can be practised separately.
How to think about it
After a bear card, try a toy bear, then another bear in a book. Change one condition at a time rather than adding unfamiliar words, complicated instructions and new pictures together. “Needs a model with a new picture” is a more precise observation than “has not learned it.”
Something to try
- Begin with the familiar picture to establish the activity.
- Replace it with an object and model the same word again.
- Put the examples together and invite your child to find what the word refers to.
