Maths & English
A small counting game, with English along the way
Bring quantity, numerals and spoken English into the same familiar activity.
Choose a familiar quantity range
If your child already understands quantities up to six, start there. Avoid introducing an unfamiliar maths concept and lots of new English at the same time.
Hear a word and pick up some blocks
Say “two”, then invite your child to pick up two blocks. Count them together. Swap roles so your child can choose a quantity and you can find the blocks.
Separate listening from reading
Matching a visible 2 with another 2 is different from hearing “two” and choosing 2. If a word or dot hint helped, describe it as supported practice.
Try the small web activity
Our number activity uses recordings for one to six, with five prompts per round. Replay, hints and a clearly labelled text-matching mode are available. Answers are not collected and finishing does not open a store.
